Marco has been an OSGeo Charter Member since 2015. He currently works as a Scientific Project Officer and Policy Analyst at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission in Ispra, Italy, providing scientific evidence in support to policies on (geospatial) data sharing, data spaces, open source and digital sovereignty. Among others, the team he is part of coordinates the technical implementation and evolution of the INSPIRE Directive. He is a researcher, educator and advocate on open source software and open data.

Since 2022 he is the Chair of the ISPRS Intercommission Working Group “Open innovation in Geospatial science and Remote Sensing”. He is a regular participant and speaker at Italian, European and global FOSS4G events. He was the Secretary of FOSS4G Europe 2015, a member of the Local Organising Team of FOSS4G 2022 and one of the Co-chairs of the Academic Track at FOSS4G 2022, FOSS4G 2023, FOSS4G Europe 2024 and FOSS4G Europe 2025. Since 2019, at European FOSS4G events he co-organises a dedicated Track on European applications of free and open source software.
