Massimiliano Cannata is a Professor of Geomatics at the Department of Environment, Construction and Design (DACD) of SUPSI. He holds a PhD in Geodesy and Geomatics, following an MSc in Environmental Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano.
He has been affiliated with SUPSI since 2001 and served as Head of the Geomatics sector within the Institute of Earth Sciences from 2007 to 2024. He currently acts as Head of Research, Development and Knowledge Transfer for DACD, where he also chairs the departmental Research Commission and contributes to the Directorate.
Since 2024, he leads the Open Science Competence Center within the Directorate for Research, Development and Knowledge Transfer, promoting institutional strategies and practices aligned with Open Science and Open Research Data.
Massimiliano is actively engaged in education, research, and applied services, consistently adopting an Open Science approach. He coordinates and participates in numerous national and international research projects and delivers expert services to cantonal and federal administrations as well as to private sector stakeholders.
His research focuses on the application of geospatial technologies to support sustainable management across multiple domains, including water resources, natural hazards, ecosystems, cultural heritage, tourism, spatial planning, and transportation. His core expertise includes mathematical modeling integrated within GIS, environmental monitoring systems, and interoperable web-based geospatial data services.
Massimiliano is a long-standing member of the European Geosciences Union, the Swiss geoscience community, and the OSGeo community. Within OSGeo, he has served as a board member and currently acts as coordinator of the istSOS project and co-chair of the Open Geoscience Committee.
